MY STORY
Mike Weber’s story is one of resilience, survival, and generosity, a testament to the power of the human spirit. His journey begins on Vancouver Island, where he grew up with dreams much like any other child—only to face life’s harsh realities at a tender age. His father, a dedicated Air Force officer, was his primary caregiver, and when Mike’s mother left the family at age 9, he found himself growing up faster than most children his age. By 13, he was in foster care, navigating a world without the familiar anchor of family. Fortunately his new foster father spent a lot of time with him and he was also a Carpenter and enjoyed teaching him the trade.
Despite these challenges, Mike had big dreams. At 19, he moved to Lethbridge with aspirations of joining the police force, driven by a desire to protect and serve. But life had other plans. A sudden diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes not only altered the course of his career but also reshaped his understanding of his own health. The physical and emotional toll was immense, but Mike wasn’t someone who gave up easily.
His journey led him to Edmonton, where he continued his construction training and pursued a job as a carpenter. This path eventually brought him to Kelowna, a place that would become his home. But just when life seemed to be on an even keel, another hurdle appeared. At the age of 46, Mike went to the hospital with what he thought was a simple injury—his heel was broken. Little did he know that this visit would uncover a far more serious issue: his kidneys were functioning at just 6%.
The news was devastating. Mike was immediately put on dialysis and placed on the transplant list for both a kidney and pancreas. The once-strong man who had overcome so much in his life now faced one of the toughest battles yet. For years, he fought through the grueling treatments, never losing hope that a second chance was on the horizon.
And that chance finally came. At 50, Mike received a double organ transplant—a new kidney and a new pancreas. The gift of life brought with it a renewed sense of purpose, a deep gratitude for the miracle he had been given.
Today, Mike is not only a survivor but an advocate. As a Golf Instructor in Kelowna, he dedicates his days to helping others improve their game, sharing his passion for the sport. But his mission extends beyond the golf course. Recognizing how fortunate he has been, Mike now donates 10% of all his earnings from Precision Golf Instruction to the Kidney Foundation and Diabetes Canada. His goal is simple yet profound: to give others the same fighting chance he was given.
Mike Weber’s story is not just one of survival; it’s one of giving back, of making sure that others can benefit from the same medical advances and support that saved his life. By supporting the Kidney Foundation and Diabetes Canada, you can help continue this legacy of hope. Your donation can provide the resources needed for research, treatment, and life-saving transplants that offer people like Mike a future beyond the diagnosis.
Every contribution counts, and with your help, more lives can be transformed. Join Mike in his fight to give others a second chance—because no one should have to face these battles alone.
